Dental implants are one of the most researched and most successful procedures in modern dentistry — with long-term success rates consistently above 95 percent across decades of clinical study. They’re also one of the most myth-laden. The misunderstandings circulating about implants are significant enough that patients who would be excellent candidates routinely don’t pursue them, and patients who aren’t ideal candidates sometimes arrive with unrealistic expectations.

At Alora Dentistry & Implant Center in Napa, Dr. Navpreet Bedi provides implant services alongside a full range of general and cosmetic dental care — and the implant consultation is where the most consequential myth-busting happens. Here’s the version of that conversation that belongs in a blog.

Myth: Dental Implant Surgery Is Extremely Painful

Fact: Most patients describe implant placement as significantly less uncomfortable than they expected.

Implant surgery is performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the surgical site thoroughly. Most patients report feeling pressure during the procedure but not pain. The post-operative discomfort — which typically peaks at 24 to 72 hours — is managed effectively with over-the-counter pain relievers for most patients, and prescription medication is available when needed.

The procedure that actually generates the most anticipatory anxiety is the one most patients describe afterward as “not a big deal.” This pattern is consistent enough that it deserves specific acknowledgment: the fear of the procedure is usually significantly worse than the procedure itself.

Myth: Implants Are Only for Younger Patients

Fact: Age is not a barrier to implants — overall health is.

Implant success depends on bone density, systemic health factors, and the ability to heal from a minor surgical procedure. These factors don’t automatically decline with age. Many patients in their 60s, 70s, and 80s are excellent implant candidates because their bone is healthy and their overall health allows for uncomplicated healing.

The relevant evaluation is clinical — Dr. Bedi assesses bone volume through 3D imaging, reviews medical history for conditions that affect healing (such as uncontrolled diabetes or medications that affect bone metabolism), and makes a recommendation based on each patient’s specific situation. “Too old” is almost never the actual limiting factor.

Myth: Implants Look and Feel Different From Natural Teeth

Fact: A well-placed implant with a properly designed crown is functionally and visually indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

The crown that sits on top of the implant abutment is custom-fabricated to match the shade, shape, and size of the surrounding teeth. The emergence profile — the way the crown rises from the gum tissue — is designed to replicate the natural contour of a tooth. Patients who have had implants placed by experienced clinicians consistently describe the result as feeling and functioning like a tooth that was always there.

The implant post itself is titanium and is completely below the gumline — invisible and untouchable in daily life.

Myth: Implants Are Too Expensive to Be Worth It

Fact: The cost comparison changes significantly when considered over the patient’s lifetime.

The upfront investment in an implant is higher than a bridge or a denture. Viewed over a 20-year horizon, the comparison shifts. A bridge involves crowning the two adjacent teeth on either side of the gap — permanently altering healthy tooth structure. Bridges typically need replacement every 10 to 15 years, and the adjacent crowned teeth have elevated failure risk. A denture requires adhesive, periodic relining, and eventually replacement as the bone beneath it continues to shrink.

An implant that integrates successfully and is properly maintained can last decades. It preserves the jawbone at the site, doesn’t require alteration of adjacent teeth, and eliminates the ongoing cost of replacement and maintenance that removable options accumulate. The lifetime cost calculation is often more favorable for implants than the initial price comparison suggests.

Myth: Implants Require Significant Maintenance

Fact: You care for an implant exactly the way you care for a natural tooth.

Brushing, flossing, and regular professional cleanings are everything an implant needs to remain healthy long-term. There’s no special solution, no removal for soaking, and no adhesive. The implant integrates with the jawbone and functions as a permanent fixture — requiring exactly the same hygiene that the natural teeth around it require.

The single additional consideration is that the gum tissue around the implant should be examined at regular professional appointments to ensure there’s no implant-specific inflammation (peri-implantitis). This is caught and managed easily when found early at routine visits.

Myth: If I’ve Had Bone Loss, Implants Aren’t Possible

Fact: Bone grafting has made implants possible for many patients who previously didn’t qualify.

Bone loss at an extraction site is expected — the jawbone that held the tooth root begins to resorb within weeks of extraction, and the longer the site goes without an implant, the less bone remains for placement. This is precisely why timing matters. But diminished bone doesn’t automatically mean no implant.

Bone grafting procedures — using the patient’s own bone, processed donor bone, or synthetic grafting materials — rebuild bone volume at sites that have been compromised. These procedures are performed before or in conjunction with implant placement to create the tissue environment the implant needs to integrate. Dr. Bedi evaluates bone volume through 3D cone beam CT imaging and provides a specific assessment of whether grafting would be needed and what that process would involve for each individual patient.

Myth: Implants Are Obvious in the Mouth — Everyone Will Know

Fact: The implant itself is completely hidden below the gum line, and the crown is indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

The titanium post that is the implant lives entirely below the surface — invisible and untouchable in daily life. What is visible is the crown, which is custom-fabricated to match the shade, shape, and size of the surrounding natural teeth. No one who doesn’t know you had an implant placed will be able to identify which tooth it is.
